Boys of Summer Series: Ice Cream in a Bag

I'm always on the lookout for new ideas to do with the boys.  Summer break is now here for us!  I thought each week I would share a craft or fun activity that would be great for the boys in your life (fine for girls too).

Supplies:
-1 cup of milk
-2 to 3 teaspoons of sugar
-1 teaspoon vanilla
-3 to 4 tablespoons of salt
-1 gallon size Ziploc bag
-1 quart size Ziploc bag
-sprinkles optional but pretty much necessary :)

Directions:
1. Pour milk, sugar and vanilla in a quart size bag. Seal close and make sure to get out all the air. In the gallon size bag, add the ice and salt. Place the quart size bag into the gallon size bag. Seal it and make sure to get out as much air as possible. Go outside! :)

2. Shake, shake, shake!! Shake the bag for 5-10 minutes. The bag will get really cold and your boys might need a little help.  You can feel the ice cream and determine when its ready.

3. Carefully scoop out the ice cream from the bag into a bowl.  Make sure to not get any of the salt into the ice cream. I wiped the quart size bag down first.

4. Add sprinkles and enjoy!

If your little guy makes this, please leave me a link to your blog post in this comment section!  I would love to see it.

  3. I've got to try this - my husband and I have different ideas as to what makes good ice cream. This will allow me to have just enough for me!

  4. This is SO cool! Our babysitter makes home made ice cream with one of those old fashioned ice cream makers and my daughter thinks she is just the bee's knees! I will have to try this idea for sure!

  9. I just tried it and finished my last bite...I'm sold - that was DELICIOUS. Granted, I didn't have a gallon bag so I had to use a plastic bag from the grocery store...that got cold so I put it in a trash bag...that got cold so I carried around all that in a towel, but the end result...heaven. Can't wait for my husband to try it. Actually, we have an ice cream machine but so far it's been yucky. This was a treat. Alright, I'll quit writing.

  15. We just tried it and it didn't work. :( Is it too hot outside? It's close to 100. The ice melted immediately.
